museum of history and industryThe Museum of Science and Industry, located in Chicago, IL, is quite the historical landmark. In addition to its amazing exhibits, the building itself was made for the World’s Fair- Colombian Exposition. It is the only remaining building from the World’s Fair and offers an exhibit and tour strictly on this event. I found the tour to be very informative! It provided me with history and insight. After visiting, I have a more appreciative view of the city of Chicago. The other exhibits in the museum are just as interesting. They have a section of the museum that is made up of old buildings, sort of resembling an old town, complete with brick roads. There is also an old-style theater that made me feel like I was literally living in that time period. They also have many different aircrafts hanging from the ceiling and a full size submarine as well. One of my favorite things they offer happens to be sold at the gift shop- the astronaut ice cream (the type that is freeze dried)! It is delicious! If you’re in the Chicago area, and have time on your hands, definitely pay a visit to the Museum of Science and Industry. There is so much to see and learn! See Mother Nature’s Power At The Johnstown Flood Museum In Johnstown, PA

http://www.trainweb.org/horseshoecurve-nrhs/Photos/UD_Photos/PRR%20STATION%20JOHNSTOWN%20AFTER%20FLOOD%203-18-36.jpgThe little industrial steel city of Johnstown, Pennsylvania is home to the Johnstown Flood Museum. This community is precipitously located in a river valley that has been decimated by numerous floods over the years, the most destructive being the flood of 1889. On that fateful day, more than 2200 individuals perished when the South Fork Dam broke. A rush of water came flooding into the town, killing everyone in its path and destroying homes, and buildings in its way. The Johnstown Flood Museum recreates the events leading up to the flood and has a fascinating display of artifacts that tell the story of the Johnstown people during this period. Touring the museum is a somber experience, as visitors are able to see exhibits and actual artifacts rescued from the flood’s remains, including housewares, photographs, and even the actual quilts and blankets that were used in the rescue efforts. Also part of the tour is a screening of the academy-award winning film, “The Johnstown Flood,” which is shown in high definition, and propels viewers to experience the frightening hours before the dam broke and the chilling aftermath. As one of the worst natural disasters in America’s history, the Museum honors those whose heroic efforts saved lives, and shows how the miracles of modern engineering has made dams safer in today’s modern society. Touring the exhibits in the Johnstown Flood Museum makes you both appreciate and fear the ferocity of Mother Nature. This is a fascinating museum and is highly recommended. Educational Fun At Mill City Museum In Minneapolis, MN

Posted by Jordan G. on May 09, 2010
Arts & Entertainment, Education, Sports & Recreation / No Comments

mill city museumMill City Museum in Minneapolis, MN is a real gem in the heart of the city. The museum is housed in an old flourmill on the Mississippi river bank, near St Anthony falls. It focuses on the history of milling in Minneapolis and surrounding areas. The main attractions include a humorous film highlighting the rich history of Minneapolis, starting before the area was settled and continuing through present day. The museum also has an amazing water-play room that allows visitors to simulate guiding logs into sawmills, creating the St Anthony Falls apron, and the water pressure used to run the mill when it was still active. There is also a baking lab where visitors can learn about the science behind baking and even sample some fresh baked items. The most exciting part of the museum is the elevator ride. It is in an old freight elevator that goes up and down the many levels of the building, stopping and showing automated vignettes of when the mill used to run, with voice-overs by former employees of the mill. Each floor the elevator stops on shows a different part of the old mill running as it used to. Visitors see an office decorated 60’s style, the boiler room with the machines running, and some different machines that employees used to get the flour ready to ship. There are also special effects and lighting that make an amazing show. At the end of the ride, guests are let out on the top of the old mill building where they can view a beautiful panoramic of the Minneapolis and Mississippi river area. The museum also has a café and gift shop near the entrance. The price is well worth the education and entertainment of visiting! http://www.flickr.com/photos/svenstorm/1547867923/There are many guided walking tours that will take you around the beautiful and historic city of Salem, but many tourists complain about cheesiness and historical inaccuracies after joining most. Out of all the tours in town, Spellbound Tours is the best bang for your buck. The guides are informed and knowledgeable and you can tell they really know their history and love their jobs. Owner and lead ghost hunter, Mollie Stewart, prides her business on its guided nightly interactive ghost hunt tour, The Vampire and Ghost Hunt Tour. Customers attending are encouraged to bring their own cameras as the tour visits the most haunted places in Salem and discusses why they are haunted while explaining the technology and theory of paranormal investigation. Also discussed are some of the stranger and more gory details of weird New England history, including cases of disease confused with vampirism and the ensuing tragedies. There is also a daytime tour, The Witchcraft and Cemetery Tour, which visits the Old Burying Point cemetery and other historic sites in town while discussing Witchcraft and Voodoo and its relation to the Witchcraft Hysteria of 1692. This tour is great for school groups, very educational, yet macabre and weird enough to keep the kids’ attention. There are many fly-by-night tour companies in town, but Spellbound Tours has been in Salem longer than most others and is well respected in the community. It is the standard for haunted and historic guided walking tours in Salem. Find more great businesses near you with globalYP.net, a searchable online directory.

The Seattle Space Needle Serves Up Fun And Fine Dining In Seattle, WA

http://www.flickr.com/photos/paraflyer/2174333019/The Seattle Space Needle could be looked at as many different things. To some, it’s a restaurant. To others, it’s a landmark. To me, it’s a tool to see the city. The Space Needle sits in a park called the “Seattle Center.” The first time I went there was for Valentine’s Day. The restaurant is about a quarter of the way up. It’s quite a hefty charge, though. I think about $35 per person. But, it’s totally worth it. The food is great. Their desserts in particular are definitely worthy of bragging about. They have the kind of desserts that require a few people to tackle the whole thing. Another cool feature about the restaurant is that it rotates, so you can secretly talk to other costumers! For example, I took a napkin and wrote “Where’s Waldo” and put in on the window. When the napkin came back around to me, tons of other people had written on it! The other cool part about the Needle is the observation deck at the top. At the top inside, there is the history of the construction of the Space Needle along with history of the general Seattle area. If you walk outside there’s a deck that loops around the whole top. Of course there’s a tall fence protecting you, so it’s children friendly. It should be at the top of the list for Seattle visitors. Bookman Bookwoman Books Is A Wonderful, Old-Fashioned Book Store In Nashville, TN

Posted by tluke on April 15, 2010
Education, Retail Stores / No Comments

Bookman Bookwoman BooksThe old-fashioned, privately-owned specialty book store seems increasingly like a dying breed, but Bookman/Bookwoman proves that when you do it right, if you have a great location and a reputation as a local landmark, you can still make it work. Just step inside and smell the place and you’ll understand the difference between a store like this and cookie-cutter international chains: you’ll smell old paper and leather bindings and, well, just books, with personality and history. Most of the stock at Bookman/Bookwoman is used books, ranging from bestsellers to rarities and nostalgia treasures. It’s the kind of place where you can just lose yourself for hours, discovering books you never knew existed or had forgotten about. It’s a wonderful place with an increasingly rare and magical atmosphere. They host school readings and book club meetings, as well, giving the place a community-centered feel. They specialize, in part, in local and regional history, which also grounds them and gives them a specific appeal that national chains can’t match. In short, Bookman/Bookwoman is the kind of place that needs to be around – it’s just good for the book lover’s soul. If you love to read, this place will be paradise – just come in and lose yourself! Sarvey Wildlife Center Does Amazing Things For Arlington, WA’s Wild Animals

Posted by Keri W. on March 27, 2010
Education, Personal Care & Services / No Comments

http://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfraven/4177777687/If there’s a wild animal in need, Sarvey Wildlife Center is there to help. They specialize in the rehabilitation of wild animals, ranging from massive predatory birds to a tiny injured squirrel. The staff there is nice and accommodating to those who stop by, and they frequently have positions open for those who wish to volunteer and obtain experience working with these animals. They readily take animals from the public who have caught them and brought them in for many reasons (including menacing behavior, aggression, injury, or sickness). Those who bring in animals also have an option of having them released back onto their own property when the animal returns to wellness. The Sarvey Wildlife Center is located a bit out of the way and can be a little hard to locate at first, but ultimately, being away from the bustle of cities, cars, and other distractions is less stressful for the animals, especially ones that live there permanently due to injury. Sarvey allows visitors to enter their special “raptor room” as well, so that you can get up close and personal with their birds of prey and learn more about them (many have never seen a bald eagle a foot away from their face before). Donations are requested when dropping off an animal; however, merely to help offset the cost of caring for them. See what else your area has to offer by searching on globalYP.net, an online directory.
