It’s hard enough to find real Mexican food, rather than Tex-Mex, in the United States, period. It’s even harder to find that authentic Mexican taste in the northeastern part of the country, and nearly impossible in Maine…until now! The Fajita Grill, in Westbrook, Maine, is an exception to the chain restaurants or the mom-and-pop places that throw tacos on their menu and call themselves Mexican. Fajita Grill is Mexican-owned and almost entirely Mexican-staffed, and is a good…no, great…no, marvelous place to get real Mexican food in the northeast. The food at The Fajita Grill, apart from being authentic (no Ortega taco shells here!), is absolutely melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The variety on the menu is astounding, and you’re likely to find dishes you have never heard of before. I encourage you to try them for some real regional Mexican favorites (most of the staff is from the Guadelajara region of Mexico). As a free appetizer, you are presented with an overflowing bowl of warm, homemade tortilla chips and the homemade house salsa. The chips are definitely not off-the-shelf chips from the store, and it’s hard to resist filling up on them before the food even arrives! But, if you have an especially large appetite, or are with a group (or, better yet, a group of exceptionally large appetites), the extraordinarily friendly wait staff will fill it up for you again, as many times as you like. Actually, the staff and the atmosphere is a huge part of the attraction of The Fajita Grill. The ambience is great, it feels like a party every night, and the place is usually packed with folks who have tired of Taco Bell and other “Mexican” chains, and discovered this hidden gem. My absolute favorite is the burrito roqueta, a delicious serving of savory pork wrapped in a homemade flour tortilla and smothered in a white cheese sauce with a light green chile. I usually round out the meal with a side of black beans and rice, and end up with plenty to take home, because the portions they serve up at The Fajita Grill are enormous. And did I mention the prices? That same burrito, served with the rice and beans for lunch, will run you around $6. Dinner is slightly more expensive, but the portions are commensurately larger. If you enjoy Mexican food as much as I do, I urge you, even plead with you, to give The Fajita Grill a try. You’ll never want to go anywhere else for Mexican food in southern Maine again! You’ll never want to use the phonebook again when you start using globalYP.net, an online directory.
