Nutter’s Ice Cream is notorious in Washington County, MD, and the eastern panhandle of WV. On a hot summer day there will be a line out the door and snaking down the sidewalk. Rather than being an inconvenience, this is a chance for people to chat, run into old friends, and watch the antics of excited children. Nutter’s serves a large variety of ice cream, sundaes, frozen ices, and other unique frozen treats. The wide and every-changing display of Hershey’s ice cream flavors always includes traditional favorites such as vanilla, peanut-butter swirl, and strawberry as well as new favorites like Moose Tracks, and funky seasonal tastes such as pumpkin or cinnamon. There is a flavor to suit everybody, and an assortment of toppings to sprinkle on top! Try a “lollipop” which is several layers of ice cream and snow-cone, with flavors for each of your choosing! This is one of my favorites – I usually go for soft-serve vanilla ice cream with lemonade snow-cone. Nutter is not just an ice cream store. It is a community gathering place for young and old. There are some small tables inside and several benches outside where patrons can relax and enjoy their dessert. The historic charm of Sharpsburg makes it a nice option to leisurely walk through town, admiring the architecture, informational signs, and other small shops. Nutter’s is also a big support of the local baseball team, and supports them every year in the Sharpsburg parade. Inside Nutter’s are fun displays of whimsical objects from the past. The store also lets locals post information about upcoming events or job opportunities. All in all, Nutter’s Ice Cream is one place you must see if passing near Sharpsburg, MD!
