Saeng Thai House, located in Portland, is a standout among the city’s many Thai restaurants. Because of its high quality food, extremely friendly service, and relaxing dining environment, it is a restaurant that I have chosen to enjoy time and time again when the craving for spicy, tasty Thai food overcomes me. Saeng offers all the same dishes you’ve come to expect from a Thai restaurant, including the ever-popular Pad Thai (which comes with your choice of shrimp, chicken, pork, tofu, or duck), and I can tell you with one-hundred percent confidence that you’ll find no better Pad Thai outside of Thailand itself. Saeng manages a perfect blend of fish-sauce and peanut to give its Pad Thai a supremely sweet/salty flavor. The bean sprouts are always crisp, the meat always tender, and the vegetables delicious. For those who are looking to expand their range when it comes to Thai cuisine, Saeng also offers a great variety of curry and rice dishes, all of which are superb. Some of my favorites are chicken with cashews and chicken with red curry. The appetizer list is also extensive, and both Saeng’s egg rolls and soups are exquisite (Tom Yam Koon is a favorite of mine). The restaurant also has a pleasant, warm atmosphere about it which makes it perfect for dinner (if not just a touch dark for lunch). There are enough tables to accommodate a large number of diners, yet it always feels like a cozy, hole-in-the wall spot that only you and a few others know about, which is a great quality to have. The service is polite almost to a fault, but not at all intrusive. Prices are very reasonable, and it is easy to get dinner for two with drinks for under $30.00. Saeng also provides very fast and efficient take-out service, if Thai food in the comfort of your own living room is in order. Like I said, Portland has many Thai restaurants, and almost all are worth checking out, but Saeng Thai House has that little something special that keeps me (and a rather large and faithful clientele) coming back for more.
