Saul’s Restaurant and Deli is a great local hang-out for Berkeleyans. They serve Jewish and Eastern European cuisine and have very outgoing servers who’ll remember your name and your order the next time you come in. Locally owned and operated, the deli tries to be an “authentic, vibrant, relevant delicatessen.” Their menu has lots of seasonal specials and they have handmade Acme rye, scratch-made sodas and local, grass-fed beef. The rye toast is delicious! The borsht is available in the summer when beets are in season and the gefilte fish is made in-house from fresh fish, but only available on the holidays. All the fish is from Monterey Fish Company, a local company with sustainable practices. The sandwiches are made with local pastrami and are intentionally small – six ounces rather than the eight or twelve that were traditionally served in the time of cheaply produced meat. You get a pickle plate with your lunch (a plate of perfectly pickled, slightly spiced pickle slices). The dishes range from the decidedly oddball like Tofu Scramble to old-style like Challah French Toast and Salami & Eggs. They are always happy to see you at Saul’s, so stop by.
