One of the great things about living in Long Island is the variety of fun, educational activities individuals can experience together as a family. Our family’s new favorite find is the American Air Power Museum in Farmingdale, NY. While it is not as large as some other museums, there are tons of displays that teach about the history of military aviation in the United States, while at the same time presenting the larger context of those wars and conflicts as a whole. There is a huge collection of vintage aircraft, many dating from World War I and World War II, which guests can enter to get a feeling for what life was like for those pioneering American aviators. There is ample opportunity to learn about each of the planes and what role they played in defending the United States from its enemies. Additionally, the American Air Power Museum has a robust schedule of special events to help commemorate and observe important days in US military history. My family recently went to see the annual memorial of the attack at Pearl Harbor, which really made it seem more real for my kids. The museum also offers flight experiences on its C-47 D-Day “veteran” by becoming a contributing member – you march out in gear with Airborne living historians and fly over the south shore beaches. Powerful and memorable.
