The San Marco Bookstore in Jacksonville, Florida is quite a gem. In a city filled with chain stores this bookstore is a breath of fresh air. In stock are not only new books but also used, vintage, and out of print books. I have been able to find delightful old novels for very good prices. About a month ago I bought a book from the 1960’s for only five dollars. This is a really nice place to find those books from yesteryear. Some even include old notes that people have written in them. Classics are available and in a variety of different editions and cover styles. There are many great children’s books and I think they can even customize a special one just for your child. Also, the store specializes in old Florida history, and in addition to this, the staff is very helpful. They are not the annoying, pesky type who constantly watch and question you, but they will help you when you are in need. The location is convenient for those who live at and near San Marco. Parking can be an issue when the square is crowded, especially during lunchtime on the weekends, but it is not horrible. Morristown Bible Book Store in Morristown, TN is a great family friendly place to shop. If you are looking for great gifts, this is the place to go! I enjoy the selection of music, books, and specialty items in stock. The staff is very helpful when trying to find certain products. They even have an area for kids! They carry numerous books, such as self-help, religious, fiction books, and Bibles. The music area is one of my favorites. I enjoy listening to samples of Christian music right in the store. While the entrance is a little hard to find, The Downtowne Bookstore in Riverside, CA is a refreshing breath of air in a world all too saturated with big bookstores. The store entrance is down a little walkway off the walking mall in downtown Riverside. You know right away that you have found a hidden treasure in the Inland Empire. The Downtowne Bookstore is independently owned and has a great vibe to it. This establishment has a great selection of used books. The store even carries recently published books. It is easy to walk out with a bag full of books and your wallet just as full as when you entered. Their stock includes everything from romance, to science fiction, to the classics. The owners and workers are very helpful and will go the extra mile to help you find the book you are looking for. They are always well stocked and fairly organized. Beth’s Books, located at 2700 Chartres St. in New Orleans, LA, is a small, but packed treasure of used and new books. The person behind the counter is always friendly and helpful. Customers are given the freedom to browse and read at leisure. The full shelves and tilting piles of books exude the feel of a writer’s secret hideaway. You will get light streaming in the windows in the daytime, night and stars blanketing the view at night. This Bywater neighborhood shop has a great atmosphere. The selection is impressive. I personally enjoy browsing through the New Orleans section. Every time I walk into Beth’s I know that I am going to leave with a great, one of a kind find. On my last visit I saw excellent used copies of gems, like Jeri Cain Rossi’s Red Wine Moan, Tom Piazza’s Why New Orleans Matters, the anthology French Quarter Fiction, and Andrei Codrescu’s The Blood Countess. Karen’s Book Barn & Java Stop is a small, locally owned and operated shop on the Main Street of LaGrange’s Historic District. They buy and sell used books, gifts and coffee. They have a wide variety of blended drinks, lattes and smoothies. Karen’s is a great little place to stop and visit in LaGrange. Right on the Main Street where a train runs right through the middle of the road every hour – a must see. Karen’s is THE place to start your visit in the historic district of LaGrange, KY. Although there are a few quibbles (seating is sparse, especially if the shop is crowded, and the storefront is a bit cramped), Karen’s is a nice little bookstore, and a trip to LaGrange would be lacking without a visit! Independent bookstores are disappearing at an alarming rate these days, making it that much more of a pleasant surprise when The Rabbit Hole opened in downtown Fitchburg just over a year ago. The owner managed to create an incredibly comfortable, cozy atmosphere that’s perfect for browsing. In addition to a great selection of traditional fiction and classic titles (many of which are available used and therefore at a significantly more reasonable price), The Rabbit Hole stocks an eclectic array of books in genres such as pop culture, art, and science fiction/geek lit. There are also lots of items beyond books to enjoy. Local artists display their work for sale here, and there’s a large collection of vinyl on hand as well. The shop fills two floors of space joined by a funky spiral staircase (or elevator, for those who prefer that method to reach the second floor), and there’s a welcoming set of couches and free coffee if you want to settle in for awhile. In the short time since its grand opening, the shop has done an outstanding job weaving itself into the fabric of the city. The venue hosts author readings, children’s activities, and a book club, among other things. The Rabbit Hole has also become an increasingly vibrant spot to catch up-and-coming musicians. Whatever your favorite type of music – pop, folk, electronica – you’re bound to find something you’ll enjoy playing live at The Rabbit Hole. And the vast majority of shows are free! PJ’s College Books is absolutely the best way to buy college books in Salt Lake City, UT. You would not believe the selections and prices.
