Wonder Book and Video is possibly the best book store that I have ever had the pleasure of exploring. Upon your first steps inside, you will not truly realize the scale and variety of this independent book store, but once you step into the forest that is created by its floor-to-ceiling shelves you may find yourself overwhelmed by the potential of its contents. From classic leather bound novels to detailed guides on how to do just about anything you set your mind to, Wonder Book offers a wealth of unimaginable possibility and knowledge at prices that any reader can afford. Never before have I felt so overwhelmed and inspired at the same moment. Wonder Book’s prices beat any used or new book store in the area and, if that wasn’t enough, offer a large variety of used DVDs and rental DVDs as low as $1. I have even found brand new hardbacks for as low as $0.50. They will also buy almost any used book you offer them at a pay that rivals that of any of its competitors. Its friendly and informative staff, coupled with its low prices and extensive variety, make Wonder Book and Video the most satisfying store for readers of all kinds. There’s nothing like Book Soup, the eclectic book store on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, CA. Book Soup looks like it was pieced together in the 1950s and let all the best books in the world congregate until the right customer for each one wandered in. While waiting for the customers, celebrity sightings are frequent. It is the local bookstore to neighborhoods of Beverly Hills, Holmby Hills and West Hollywood. Just yards away from Whisky-a-Go-Go, The Viper Room and the brown “Welcome to Beverly Hills” sign, Book Soup deserves historical landmark status. If you are picturing a neatly cataloged, mainstream bookstore, think again. Part of the fun at this store is finding what you want and then discovering untold treasures during the search. There are travel guides, photo books, barely-published novels, poetry, biographies, cards, posters, and celebrity books signed by all the stars that stop by for a book signing. On the off chance that none of the tens of thousands of books inside strike a person’s fancy, there is also a newsstand outside where the beautiful glossy magazines still look elegant. Book Soup is a book lover’s dream, paradise for any reader, and heaven for those looking for something to read under the covers or on the beach. They just do not make stores like this any more! Seaburn Books is Astoria, New York’s only bookstore. For a large neighborhood, this is a surprise. One would assume that a big name retailer would have moved in by now; however, this is a blessing in disguise for Sam Chekwas, owner of Seaburn Books, who otherwise would probably be squeezed out by such competition. Dr. Chekwas, a Nigerian scholar who spent time in Greece and speaks the language fluently, runs a publishing company out of this bookstore which specializes in African American literature, as well as Greek and Spanish books, fitting into Astoria’s demographic very well. Going into the store, you see every nook and cranny filled with books ranging from general interest to very specialized topics like health, philosophy and language. The only complaint you could have about the store is that the organization of it is a bit un-orderly, and hard to navigate if simply browsing, but that’s half the fun. When I went myself, I found sections with last-name alphabetizing, and some with title alphabetizing. However, there is always a knowledgeable staff member on hand to guide you; many times Dr. Chekwas himself is there. While it may not be the most time-efficient bookstore, it is easy to get lost in it and find a rare gem you may not have expected to buy. The historic Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago has a number of excellent bookstores, but 57th Street Books is one of the best. It is located near several restaurants and other bookstores on 57th street, making it a great place to spend to a weekend afternoon. The bookstore carries a wide selection of literature and popular non-fiction, including a large children’s section. Though 57th Street’s sister-store, the Seminary Co-op, carries most of their joint inventory’s academic titles, the selection at 57th is still geared for their intellectual clientele from the nearby University of Chicago. The classic literature section is large and inclusive, but doesn’t cramp their selection of more popular genre fiction. Their sci-fi/fantasy and mystery selections include all the popular authors, as well as a few that are less well known, so it’s a great place to find new authors to enjoy. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful, and there are notes pointing out their favorite books throughout the store, which is also helpful if you are browsing for something new to read. All in all, it’s a wonderful bookstore for a true bibliophile to spend lots of time browsing. The only downside to the store is that they are located in the basement of their building, so you have to walk a narrow staircase in order to enter the store, which means handicap access is limited. Joseph-Beth Booksellers’ location in Lexington, KY is a fascinating place that one could wander for hours. Unlike many chain bookstores, Joseph-Beth Booksellers manages to give a cozy impression without sacrificing the size and content of the store. The store itself is two floors, with the bottom floor devoted to children’s literature. The top floor offers reading more aimed at adults, as well as a café, a music and DVD section, and merchandise. The merchandise tends to be eclectic, and samples many artists and foods from the region. As this bookstore is located in the heart of horse country, many of the items for sale cater to those who love horses and racing. The store also features an extensive section of literature on Kentucky, and events with native Kentucky authors are held frequently. Additionally, Joseph-Beth Booksellers has many tables of discounted books at great prices. I also always check out their employee recommendations for books that I may not have otherwise considered when making my selections. I enjoy the fact that displays of merchandise are interspersed with themed book displays around the store. It somehow helps bring themes alive from the featured books. Finally, Joseph-Beth Booksellers features benches and seats tucked away around the store to allow patrons the chance to privately sit and read before making their purchases. I happened upon a fantastic independent book store called Quail Ridge Books & Music in Raleigh, NC. It is quite a robust store! Not only do they have the usual greeting cards, music and gift-wrapping options, they also have had wine-offerings, as well as daily authors and musical guests. These guests are both local and world-renowned. I was able to attend a presentation by Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Love, and Pray. I enjoyed it immensely and got my book signed! There are plenty of offerings for every taste, kids included. Generally, you can bring your own book for the signing, instead of being required to purchase a new one at the presentation. Weekly emails are sent listing upcoming presenters, as well as great book reviews. These have encouraged me to consider reading books that I would not have chosen otherwise. The staff is very knowledgeable and can recommend books for any taste. There are many volunteers at the store, which speaks volumes of its popularity. There is ample parking, so you need not worry about finding a space. Visit to satisfy your guilty pleasure of book shopping! Clemens & Co. Books is exactly the kind of place you hope to find when you are exploring a picturesque, historic downtown area like Hogansville, GA. Hawsey’s Book Index, a Pensacola, FL institution, is actually one of the finest used bookstores in the sunshine state. Hawsey’s specializes in genre fiction, and offers shelves upon shelves of used paperback and hardcover romance, mystery, sci-fi, horror, and even men’s adventure novels to peruse.
