There have been a lot of changes to Gil & Deb’s Chicago Style Sandwiches over the past year. Starting out as a hot dog stand they have since exploded into popularity, moved into a building, and have become a source of pride for their host town, Mountain Home, AR. Their menu is a small, but always growing, assemblage of hot deli delights: sausages (all-beef hot dogs, Polish), Italian beef, meatball sandwich, and their addictive gyros. Their portions are huge and difficult, even for the largest appetite, to finish. Even the humble bag-of-fries is elevated to inspirational heights in their hands, and there is a respectable selection of beverages, including beer. What about the prices? A meal at Gil & Deb’s is comparable, in price, to that of say, a large combo meal at a fast-food joint: $10 or so. But the quality of the food and the portion size is unbeatable. The staff is friendly, but no-nonsense, and they have filled their restaurant to the brim with Chicago memorabilia. The place is bursting with energy and it is plain to see that the owners and employees take a lot of pride in the restaurant. All-in-all, they are a welcome addition to the humble town of Mountain Home, Arkansas, and surely an oasis for those who love the city. I cannot say enough good things about New York Style Pizza in Cleveland, OH. I discovered this little pizza shop one evening while working the late shift at on of my part time jobs nearly ten years ago. I remember it vividly because it was the best meatball sub I ever had. They toasted the bread ever so lightly and it came with grill onions and peppers. Plus they made their own meatballs. I later learned that this was not the only unique quality about this restaurant. It turns out they not only have the best tasting pizza in Cleveland but the biggest. They offer a 36 inch pizza that you have to turn nearly sideways to fit through the door. It took us three days to finish that pizza but it was good to the last piece. New York Style offers several menu items from sandwiches to salads, but the most interesting item I found and fell in love with is their Jamaican beef patty. The best way to describe it is to call it a spicy beef hot pocket. You can order it with or without cheese. They do not make them there and you can order them on the internet, but they are the only eatery I know that serves them. I have to say I really wish I still lived in the area because I haven’t found a place quite like it since. If your ever on the west side of Cleveland check them out you wont be disappointed.
