Planet Pizza is unlike any other Maury County pizzeria in Columbia, TN. They combine a massive menu with quality ingredients, a fun dine-in experience, and an odd, but good sense of humor. Their pizza is easily distinguishable from both the local chains and the privately owned Italian restaurants. The pizza is smothered in the best of sauce and the greatest cheeses. Top that off with the fact that you can customize any of their pizzas to suit your own wants, at little to no additional cost. This truly is a great deal! The establishment itself is small, but if you want to sit and wait in the restaurant as your pizza is being freshly baked, you can have a fun time reading the mock inspirational posters they have hanging around. Once you read them, you will have a good laugh at the audacity of their artists. If you are in a rush, however, you can call in and have the pizza cooked at the time of your choosing. These customers can choose to either pick up their order or have it delivered right to their doorstep. Visit to enjoy some of the best pizza in town! Turbo Toast Comics is probably the best place in Columbia, Tennessee, to go to find just about any collectible. They have hundreds of comic books to pick from at any given time, many that are no longer in print and worth at least the price tag that Turbo Toast puts on them. If you enjoy reading the classic comics, or want to trade in some of your own for a little cash or credit, check this place out. In addition to their overwhelming collection of recreational literature, Turbo Toast Comics also has hundreds of collectible action figures, models, and display pieces that you will have a hard time finding anywhere else, including websites like eBay and Amazon. Classic Star Wars pieces, Gundam models from every series, old-edition Marvel action figures, and star ships from the Star Trek Universe will give any hard-core collector a giddy feeling. If that isn’t enough for you, they have dozens of DVD collections for various Anime and American cartoon series. There is very little in regards to comic books, American cartoons, Anime, fantasy, and science fiction that you won’t be able to find at Turbo Toast Comics. I give them four stars out of five. La Fuente Mexican Restaurant, at 1511 Nashville Highway, probably makes some of the best Mexican food in Tennessee, hands down. The only thing that will even remotely surpass them is a home-cooked Mexican meal by a real Mexican, and even then, the cut comes close. La Fuente’s most outstanding aspect (besides the food) is probably the extent they go to in order to provide the customer an authentic Mexican dining experience. Where most Mexican restaurants have traditional benches or chairs and a mundane table, La Fuente goes so far as to import authentic, high-quality Mexican furniture. Wooden, high-backed chairs, authentic paintings and sculptures, and even the way the walls are constructed and decorated make you feel like you’re truly at a nice restaurant in Mexico. Throw in some music “en espanol”, and the experience is pretty much complete. The food is hands down the best Mexican food in town. La Fuente has one of the largest selections of Mexican and hybrid dishes in the city of Columbia, TN, all made fresh when you order. Just their beans and rice are enough to make an excellent meal out of, but their large selection of tacos, chimichangas, burritos, enchiladas, and many other dishes are as good as they get. And they always serve enough. Most of the time, you’ll be ordering a to-go box because they feed you so much. Save some of your time with globalYP.net, an online directory.
Starz Ice Cream is a local, privately-owned restaurant, though you wouldn’t have been able to tell if you walked inside. The establishment is professionally organized, with clean tile walls and flooring, superior to most chain establishments in both construction and intense attention to cleanliness. The colors used are very lively, instantly creating an air that is both friendly and fun. Starz Ice Cream only uses the best brands of ice cream and frozen yogurt for their dishes, most notably Blue Bell Ice Cream. However, they have many original and classic variations of ice cream, one of their most popular dishes being the Chunky Monkey. The Chunky Monkey, costing only a couple dollars, is a good treat for any time of the year, packed with chocolates of several kinds inside of a delicious, creamy, well-blended chocolate ice cream. Located right next to Food Lion on Trotwood Avenue, Starz Ice Cream is the perfect place to stop for a good treat after any event. They also host parties for all kinds of occasions, including birthday parties. They tend to close pretty early, especially in the Winter, so make sure you stop by earlier during the day. Victoria Gastro Pub is a fairly recent addition to the Columbia restaurant scene, but it’s making a big splash. “Gastropubs” are a recent phenomenon, and they offer higher-end pub food. The head chef used to work at Iron Bridge Wine Company in Ellicott City. They do the basics well—the duck fat fries that come with a garlic aioli are delicious, and can be topped with melted gruyere for an extra treat. The roasted lamb I ordered was alright but my date got a lobster grilled cheese that was amazing. They have a good wine and beer selection, including a healthy range of microbrews on draft (Dogfish Head, Stone, Flying Dog, Blue Moon). Don’t go during happy hour if you want to have a quiet meal, as it can get pretty loud in the bar. But their wide selection of cocktails may be enough to tempt you, including a spectacular “Adults Only” Chai Tea with chai liqueur. Pricing isn’t bad, as entrees don’t top $25 and specials are common. And where else can you find Cornish Game Hen in Columbia? Victoria Gastro Pub comes highly recommended, if you’re looking for classed-up comfort food that will leave you wholly satisfied. The Ole Lamplighter Inn Restaurant is a true Southern dining experience. It’s an older establishment, and walking inside, you see a restaurant that has an old-timey feel to it. The service is great, the people are generally nice and courteous (as you would expect from any decent Southern-style restaurant). The decor is soft and comfortable, and though the establishment is small there is always enough space to sit comfortably. The menu is pretty standard, although you will find a few dishes that you don’t find at many other places, such as some of the best quail that I’ve had in my entire life. Catfish, steak, shellfish, chicken, hamburgers…you name it. They have all of the traditional American dishes cooked with a country kitchen twist. The location, though, is probably one of the most unique aspects of this restaurant. The Ole Lamplighter Inn Restaurant is set on the cliff side of the Duck River, part of it hanging over the river. The view from here during the day and early evening is spectacular, showing off the river, the surrounding cliff sides, and farmland. During a sunset on a clear day, the entire scene can be absolutely spectacular. Explore your city with globalYP.net, yellow pages that are online.
Swiftwater Beads is a small, locally-owned supply store for jewelry and beading supplies. They carry a large selection of glass, plastic, metal, crystal, and semi-precious beads. Additionally, they have all of the tools and supplies that you could need, including wires in common and precious metals. The staff at Swiftwater is always helpful and accommodating to customer requests. I have received valuable advice and informal instruction on beading technique each time I visit the store. There is a customer work area where you can start assembling your project right in the store and use some of the high quality tools that they have available. Swiftwater Beads also offers instructional classes for beginner and intermediate jewelry makers. The basic beading technique class covers a variety of topics including hardware, findings, and thread or wire types. In this class, participants get hands-on practice by attempting the techniques that are modeled by the instructor. Additionally, Swiftwater offers several wire-working classes. The basic wire-working class allows participants to get familiar with using copper wire to create their own jewelry findings. Additionally, you will learn how to form and shape wire jewelry. There are other classes that cover advanced techniques such as wire wrapping, silver molding, and specific complex projects. Classes are capped at 5 participants and usually include all required materials. Prices range from 20-95 dollars depending on the length of the class and the topic. I have always received excellent, attentive service at Swiftwater. I do not hesitate to recommend them to friends and other fellow-crafters for a positive experience and high quality merchandise. I am truly, madly, deeply in love…with an ice cream flavor. Sparky’s Homemade Ice Cream would already have my heart just because it is in downtown Columbia, it displays the work of local artists, and it is cutely named after the owners’ dog (whose image you can see in the statue in front of the shop). They even have a bowl of water that they keep out, so your dog can stay cool too! But these are not the things that made me fall in love. The thing that truly sends Sparky’s over the top is their merlot ice cream with Ghirardelli dark chocolate chips. The wine is from a local vineyard, Les Bourgeois, which is worth a visit all by itself. The sweetness of the wine and the creaminess pairs perfectly with the dusty bitter crunch of the chocolate. It is heaven in a cone, and it keeps me coming back every time. It’s not the only great flavor. I have heard wonderful things about the butter pecan, and they have other unique flavors that you have never seen before, and may never see again. Make sure to time your trip as they only operate when the weather is warm, and you don’t want to miss an opportunity to try this fantastic little place. Gervais and Vine is the most happening restaurant in Columbia, SC! It is the heart of the Vista, featuring trendy urban fare and an amazing wine list. Waitresses there are “Wine Goddesses,” and they live up to their name. The dining experience at Gervais and Vine is funky, bohemian, and completely delicious. The restaurant specializes in tapas, or small foods that are ideal for sharing. If one is available, take a seat at the bar and watch the chefs work. You get the feeling that you are IN the kitchen (and essentially, you are). It is mesmerizing to watch the cooks’ lightning fast reflexes and artful platings as you relax and sip your wine. They are given to theatrics as well, tossing about squeeze bottles like flare bartenders and flaming pans when deglazing with wine. The staff is exceptionally friendly and fun. Any of the Wine Goddesses will be happy to help you select the perfect food and beverage combinations. The best part of the Gervais and Vine experience? The price. You don’t have to shell out the big ones to enjoy the amazing food, wine, and Southern hospitality. There are no food items above fifteen dollars, and many below ten! The wine list is also user-friendly and affordable. Bon apetit! For a user-friendly online directory, check out globalYP.net.
After moving downtown to the Leesburg area one of my first “to do’s” was to find a good local pizza shop. I’ve tried the name brand delivery places before but nothing can compare to your own local shop. Fortunately I did not have to look too far before I found the Pizza Palace. At first glance it is obvious that this place has been around for a while and with good reason too! The Pizza Palace has that nice comfortable, local feel to it. After visiting only few times I quickly was treated as if I had been coming in for the past 30 years. The pizza is absolutely fantastic. Nice, fresh and simple ingredients all make for a terrific tasting pie. Make sure to try out some of the other house specialties as well. I am a fan of the calzones and Greek salads with homemade Greek dressing. Don’t be afraid to wash it all down with a cold draft beer or a nice glass of wine. The staff at the Pizza Palace are absolutely fantastic. A warm and welcoming staff who are dedicated to serving nothing but the best food at excellent prices is exactly what I’ve come to expect from a local eatery.
