Heyn’s Ice Cream Shop in Iowa City, Iowa is my favorite place to visit during the summer. The environment is the traditional small Midwestern ice cream shop. There are only a few booths inside to enjoy their delicious treats. Most people choose to gather in the parking lots and visit while eating the ice cream. The best part about Heyn’s is that the ice cream is freshly made at the shop daily. There are about forty different flavors to choose from at any one time, and you can sample as many flavors as you like before making a decision on what to buy. One of my favorite flavors is cookie dough. The cookie dough is homemade before it is mixed in the ice cream. I was impressed that instead of traditional cookie dough ice cream, the batter is oatmeal cookie dough. It gives the dessert a better texture and flavor. My other favorite is the cake batter. It is very rich, and I can’t eat more than one scoop at a time. What impresses me most is how close it tastes to a cake batter I would make at home. You can actually taste the cake mix in the ice cream! I recommend that anyone driving through Iowa City should stop at Heyn’s to enjoy the best ice cream I have ever tasted.
