Busboys and Poets is many things to many people. In the morning, it serves as a coffee shop, providing wireless internet and comfortable seating to a casual crowd. The atmosphere is very inviting – couches and plush chairs abound. An adjoining bookstore sells reading material if you’ve forgotten to bring your own. The coffee is fairly standard, but the rooms are spacious and inviting. Food is above average for an establishment like this. In the afternoon and evening, it turns into a restaurant and bar. There is a good selection of beer on tap (including Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale – my favorite). Prices are reasonable for the area – $4-6 for most drinks, with specialty drinks ranging up to $8-$12. Mixed drinks are strong enough to be a decent value and the servers are very attentive. The food is also well above par. Hamburgers are generously sized and sandwiches and sides (especially the french fries) are generally excellent. Your best bet is to arrive fairly early – at around 9 pm, the place starts to fill up. If you arrive for dinner by 8 pm, you should be able to get a table with plenty of room for your party. Bonus tip: watch out for specialty nights. Busboys and Poets often hosts book signings and other events. They frequently host open-mic nights, with poetry and music. I love Flying Rhino Coffee! They are fair trade coffee bean roasters in Toledo, Ohio. It is the only place in Toledo that you can get fresh roasted coffee. You can buy it by the cup, or buy the beans and take it home. They also offer lots of specialty drinks (cappuccinos, lattes, espressos, etc.) and gourmet chocolates. Have you ever noticed that coffee beans that you buy at the grocery store have very long shelf lives? And some people think that is a good thing. Flying Rhino is the only coffee that is sold in this area that has a 3 month shelf life in a store. That may not seem like a big deal to most people, but you can definitely tell a difference in flavor in coffee that was fresh roasted vs. one that was roasted 8 months ago. It is worth it. One of the ancillary benefits is being able to sit outside and watch what transpires right downtown in Fayetteville. They have a great but small selection of gourmet beans to be ground with some interesting flavors like my favorite, Snicker Dandy! If you want to escape the noise of downtown, they also have a patio enclosure behind the store where it is nice and quiet. They have a nice little selection of breakfast items and pastries for your coffee fix in the morning, but if you like, they also provide lunch items as well. They are fairly affordable and they will even cater with enough warning. It is a great place to stop before or after a movie at the local art house theater right next store. They also have a good selection of dessert items and homemade items to satisfy a quick sweet tooth or to just go along with your coffee. The Natural Food Patch in Ferndale, Michigan, is one of very few places I frequent for grocery shopping purposes these days. Everyone who works in the store is incredibly bright, funny, personable, and helpful. They have an excellent selection of all sorts of crazy-delicious foods and beverages. They offer a vast array of natural juices and sodas – Virgil’s cream soda is the greatest invention of all time – and organic and fair trade whole-bean coffees, as well as most any kind of tea you might be interested in trying. They carry lots of different carrier oils, nut butters, and essential oils for the crafty folks among us, and have many, many natural health and beauty options for those of us who are less crafty but still environmentally conscious. If you need vitamins or supplements or obscure herbs or tinctures, the Patch is the place for you. They also provide me with all of my sushi gear. They carry environmentally friendly cleaning products, too! I go there for pretty much everything. I could probably live there if they’d let me. Give them your money! Summermoon Wood Fired Coffee in Austin, Texas is one of the most distinctive coffee shops I have ever been to. I first saw this shop while riding on a bus, and just the name alone prompted me to make a special visit. When I arrived, I noticed the set up right away. It makes you want to relax and take a-load-off. Not only do they have beautiful masculine tables and chairs, but also brightly colored couches and lounge chairs. The first time I visited Summermoon, I spent about $25. That included coffee, muffins, a banana, and some beautifully smelling soap they had for sale next to the counter. Oh yes, the coffee is great too! It is very tasty and is so good that it makes you want to share it with a friend. The Summermoon Wood Fired Coffee shop is 100% family owned and operated, uses 100% renewable energy when roasting their coffee beans, and uses 100% Organic and Arabic coffee beans, and is 100% Fair Trade Certified. I think they have a thing for “100%”, and that’s ok because their menu is 100% amazing, as well. It features hot coffees like the Summermoon Latte (my favorite because it is creamy and sweet), Half Moon Latte and Chai Vanilla Late. They also have cold coffees like Wintermoon, Hibiscus Herbal Tea, and Moon Glacier. Soups, pastries, Panini sandwiches, and Empanadas are also on their menu.
