Situated amidst business buildings, restaurants and a college campus, the little Alatte Cafe is a warm, friendly place. The shop is run by the owner, who greets you with a smile and whips up seasonal specials – like the Pumpkin Pie latte in the fall or the North Pole mocha in winter – or fixes up a meal for you at a moment’s notice. The ambience is sophisticated, the music playing from the walls around you makes one think of a small French cafe like you might find in Paris. With a subtle chicness as you sip your drink, perhaps munching on a freshly toasted bagel with cream cheese and tomato (a recommendation on the menu that makes for a warm comfort food) or else tasting a cup of Hershey’s ice cream while playing chess with a classmate out on the high tables, you’ll enjoy Alatte Cafe. Lunchers sit at the bar, conversing with the barista or each other, while college students do their homework on lush sofas. A bookshelf holds books ranging from the fictional thrillers of Koontz to a book depicting the history of the region. Every week the wall is decorated with the works of a local artist, and there is a counter exclusively covered with business cards from people of the area. The staff is friendly, and the service is top notch. If ever you’re in Downtown Norfolk and need a quiet place to unwind, Alatte Cafe is most certainly the place to do it! I recently discovered the best ice cream in Denver, CO: Bonnie Brae Ice Cream. A few of my friends and I, students at the University of Denver, ventured out this summer to find a cold treat. The ice cream at Bonnie Brae is homemade every morning, over 25 flavors that are all amazing. As college students we cannot break the bank. The ice cream cones at Bonnie Brae are very large in size and easy to share, while staying within the price range that everyone can afford. For special occasions, Bonnie Brae also makes ice cream cakes and sells the ice cream by the pint. This little shop has the feel of an old time ice cream shop, where all people are truly welcome. It is very close to Washington Park and the perfect stop on a hot day. I got the chance to return to Bonnie Brae for my birthday in the middle of January and the ice cream shop was still full of people. The only difference was that we could not sit outside and enjoy it! The next time you get a hankering for some homemade ice cream, venture down to Bonnie Brae. Make sure to bring a friend along to share! Whip N Dip Ice Cream Shoppe in Miami, FL is by far the most fabulous ice cream shop! It has been well known for years and is always busy at all hours of the day. The place is always packed with school children, college students, and adults. It is the best local treat and conveniently located. The ice cream here can’t be beat, and is much tastier than any known chain. Having only one location, it is truly the go-to place to eat ice cream in Miami. This place is highly recommended to anyone visiting Miami who is looking an inside, non-touristy feel of the city. This small shop is always decorated appropriately for holidays and boasts ice cream, delicious cookies, ice cream cakes, cookie cakes, and other incredible treats. The many toppings are one of a kind, from cookie dough, to fruit, to gummies. The look and feel is that of an old town ice cream shop, as it has not been renovated since it opened. It is a must visit! You will find yourself telling everyone about it. They also have a flavor of the day, which many of the locals are known to check online each day prior to visiting. This place just does not compare to any other! To find more local treats like this, visit globalYP.net, an online directory.

Bub’s Burgers & Ice Cream is a small family owned restaurant just off of the Monon Trail, in Carmel, IN. It is a great place to stop and grab a coke, or just relax during the afternoon with your family. Here you will find great food and a vibrant atmosphere! The establishment serves a variety of burgers with a side of French fries. The unique creations include the massive Big Ugly Burger, a giant three-pound beast that can earn you a place of honor on Bub’s wall of fame. What really separates Bub’s from other burger joints is the amazing quality of their food. Their burgers are made from fresh, hand patted ground beef, and their buns are custom made to fit their burgers, baked fresh at a local bakery. An addition to the restaurant in 2003 allowed for the budding eatery to begin selling a variety of ice cream, as well as their famous burgers. Customers can now enjoy a refreshing dessert after a scrumptious, satisfying meal. The number of flavors available caters to all taste buds! Customers can either enjoy their dessert at the restaurant or take as they walk out! Bub’s has quickly risen to be one of the best restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of attending! I highly recommend that you give it a try! To visit other unique places like this, go to globalYP.net, an online directory.
Berkshire’s Old Fashioned Custard is one of the best places in Beckley, WV if you are looking to buy grilled hot dogs and every type of ice cream treat you can imagine. They have sundaes, ice cream cones, banana splits, smoothies and many different flavors of frozen coffee. The crewmembers actually make the waffle cones themselves, so everything from this restaurant is both tasty and fresh. The restaurant also has an old fashioned feel to it in terms of both look and design (the buildings are small and covered in a black and white checkered design), which is a nice change of pace for those looking to escape the boring fast food chains. The staff is very friendly and customer service is great. There are four locations in Southern West Virginia. There is a Berkshire’s in Princeton, Sophia, and there are two in Beckley. The one on Eisenhower Drive in Beckley is the best one in my opinion. They have a drive thru, but you can also go up to the window in the front to order. They also have a nice little section beside the restaurant with tables if you choose to eat outside. To find other creative eateries like this, visit globalYP.net, an online directory.
The Port Jefferson Frigate is a charming fixture of picturesque Port Jefferson, NY. Located within walking distance of the Port Jefferson-Bridgeport ferry, it is a favorite destination of tourists and locals alike. The Frigate offers a delicious selection of hard ice cream, soft serve, frozen custard, bulk candies, old fashioned “penny candy”, popcorn, dipped fruit or marshmallows, fudge, gifts and Godiva chocolates which you can buy by the piece or by the box. Order from the special sundae counter to get a special concoction, or just enjoy a cone or cup of your favorite flavor of ice cream, sorbet, or ices – they offer over fifty tempting flavors. Take your kids or a favorite friend to the candy counter and watch their eyes grow wide at the fun selection of classic candies and novelty treats! On a hot summer’s day, happy families can be seen eating their cones outside on the long benches, and during the off season you can enjoy your treat at one of the little tables inside. A great inexpensive family afternoon can be spent strolling around the village, visiting the park, getting a slice of pizza, visiting the pets at the Save-A-Pet Castaways store, and topping it all off with a treat from the Frigate. Anyone in need of a cool, sweet, refreshing goody on a hot summer day could find their fix at Kawaii Shaved Ice at 113 N. Mays St. in Round Rock, Texas! This one-of-a-kind snow cone shop is a local favorite and it is so easy to see why. The ice used in the snow cones is made out of purified drinking water that comes from “The Water Jug” in the adjoining building. Over fifty syrup flavors that are homespun and completely delicious are available for customers to choose from. Favorite flavors include everything from cherry and grape to wedding cake and bubblegum. Any cone can be topped with sweet cream or extra syrup for a few more cents. Over the years, Kawaii’s has expanded into other yummy territory, like fresh fruit smoothies and ice cream! Do not fret over all the choices, though! Each one is delicious and bound to make mouths water, keeping the customers lining up for more. Be sure to bring cash with you! Credit cards and checks are not accepted and it would be a shame to get to the front of the line and realize that a yummy snack just slipped through your fingers! I have been a patron of Kawaii’s since I was a very young girl I love it so much that I even take the kids I baby-sit on occasion. I have yet to find a friend that does not like at least one item on their menu and I doubt that I ever will. For more tasty shops like this one, visit globalYP.net, an online directory.
Forget Ben & Jerry’s, forget Haagen-Dazs…Queen City Creamery in Cumberland, Maryland has the best ice cream you will ever taste! I say “ice cream”, but technically, it’s frozen custard. The difference is the addition of egg yolks, which give frozen custard a smoother and creamier taste than plain old ice cream. In addition to the regular flavors of chocolate and vanilla, which are served every day, Queen City Creamery also serves a different featured flavor every day. To name just a few of the flavors that you might find, there’s: Pistachio, Blueberry Muffin, Chocolate, M&M, White House Cherry, Dreamsicle …and my personal favorite, Take 5 (tastes just like the candy bar!) You can have those flavors served in a cup or on a homemade waffle cone, or in a variety of sundaes with just about any topping you can think of. You can also have them made into a milkshake, or packed as pints or quarts for you to take home! Although the frozen custard is definitely the star of the show, Queen City Creamery is more than just dessert. They also feature a full menu of breakfast options, and deli soups and sandwiches for lunch and dinner. And all day long, they serve all the coffee drinks you could want – cappuccinos, lattes, espressos and more. All this, in the beautiful setting of historic downtown Cumberland! Just steps from the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, and right off Interstate 68… you won’t regret visiting Queen City Creamery! Step away from the phonebook and visit globalYP.net, a searchable online directory.
Heyn’s Ice Cream Shop in Iowa City, Iowa is my favorite place to visit during the summer. The environment is the traditional small Midwestern ice cream shop. There are only a few booths inside to enjoy their delicious treats. Most people choose to gather in the parking lots and visit while eating the ice cream. The best part about Heyn’s is that the ice cream is freshly made at the shop daily. There are about forty different flavors to choose from at any one time, and you can sample as many flavors as you like before making a decision on what to buy. One of my favorite flavors is cookie dough. The cookie dough is homemade before it is mixed in the ice cream. I was impressed that instead of traditional cookie dough ice cream, the batter is oatmeal cookie dough. It gives the dessert a better texture and flavor. My other favorite is the cake batter. It is very rich, and I can’t eat more than one scoop at a time. What impresses me most is how close it tastes to a cake batter I would make at home. You can actually taste the cake mix in the ice cream! I recommend that anyone driving through Iowa City should stop at Heyn’s to enjoy the best ice cream I have ever tasted. You will not be disappointed, and it is very affordable. The scoops are huge as well. It’s very easy to find local business listings online with globalYP.net.
