Located in Evanston, Illinois, just north of Chicago, Mustard’s Last Stand is a small hot dog stand with a big reputation! Mustard’s has fast, friendly workers and their food is great quality. They have a wide range of menu items including Vienna Beef hot dogs, chili dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, polish sausages and much more. If you are craving a true Chicago-style hot dog without the Chicago hustle and bustle, this is the place to go. Mustard’s is located just a few blocks West of Northshore Hospital (previously Evanston Hospital) directly across the street from the Northwestern Wildkits Football field. They are well known throughout Evanston and surrounding suburbs, and have been around for 20+ years. The buns are soft and warm, the meat is quality and the toppings are generous. Their food is somewhat greasy but much less than traditional “fast food”. The fries are always cooked to perfection and piping hot, and they even have shakes and malts. They get crowded, especially around lunchtime, but the staff knows what they are doing and even at a busy time their service is lightning-fast. They have a thin deli-style counter, but if there are people in line there is not much room to eat. They do have some round picnic-style tables outside – great to enjoy your food outdoors on a nice day. Their prices are very reasonable. Overall, Mustard’s Last Stand in Evanston, Illinois is a good old-fashioned hot dog stand with great prices, even better food and friendly staff. The folks at Cheesy Jane’s have re-imagined the 1950s. Tolly Ho, in Lexington, Kentucky is an amazing burger spot. Located next to the University of Kentucky (UK) campus, this little restaurant packs a large punch. A staple to UK community since 1971, Tolly Ho has several deliciously diverse items. With fresh quality ingredients, Tolly Ho’s cooked to order menu gives its eater a homemade taste. I recently visited a friend and he immediately took me to Tolly Ho. I was skeptical at first from the old and tacky vibe that I got when initially entering. However, that quickly changed when I looked at the menu. I saw such options as the Tolly Ho, Super Ho, Mega Ho, and the Big Tolly. I ordered the Super Ho, a half pound burger with all the typical cheese/condiments on a delicious sesame seed bun. Additionally I ordered a vanilla milkshake and a side of fries. Everything was absolutely delectable. The burger was fresh and juicy, the fries crispy, and the shake cold and thick. Besides burgers, Tolly Ho also offers a variety of other options including: grilled chicken sandwiches, grilled cheese, Turkey sandwiches, hot dogs, BLTs, country fried Ho (steak), fish sandwiches, veggie burgers, a huge breakfast menu (omelets and breakfast sandwiches), an incredible sides menu, and delicious dessert selection. Tasty Dog is now serving breakfast. You can get pancakes, toast, bacon and egg sandwiches at this popular dog and hamburger restaurant. Actually, the menu is much bigger than that. Open 7- 10am for breakfast, items are made fresh, so it may take about 10-15 minutes to get your order. I tried the bacon/egg/cheese on whole wheat toast – normally 1.99, but free as part of their opening days promo. Very tasty! I will go back this morning to try something else. This might turn out to be my Saturday morning hang out spot. In addition to their great breakfast menu they have many other choices. Such as burgers, hot dogs, gyros, pitas and turkey burgers. The turkey is one of my favorites and is usually served on a whole wheat bun making this a very healthy alternative! The veggie sandwich is another good one. It’s basically a cheeseburger with everything, hold the burger. The toppings choices are so good (cucumber, pickles, tomato, lettuce, celery salt, relish, etc). Cheese fries are also excellent, as are the milkshakes. The prices here are fairly reasonable. One of my favorites for dessert are the vanilla ice cream cones for only $.99. A hard deal to beat! When in Wilmington, Delaware one must stop to eat at the famed Charcoal Pit. The Charcoal Pit’s sundaes are all named after local high school nicknames in the Wilmington area. The names of these sundaes include the Ram (Dickinson High School), the Spartan (St. Marks High School), and the Bull Dog (Brandywine High School) to name a few. These sundaes are so large two can share. This restaurant is famous for having teenagers come in and shares huge sundaes after a big game or concert. My favorite dessert sundae is “The Kitchen Sink’ For $14.99 one gets 20 scoops of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream, with banana spears, cherries, crushed walnuts, chocolate syrup, crushed pineapple, topped with whipped cream. I’ve ordered this with 5 friends and it took us 45 minutes to polish it off. It was great! So stop in and eat at The Charcoal Pit. You’ll love it! For great, fun food with a retro 1950s flair, Hub City Diner in Lafayette, LA is a great destination! Located in the Oil Center, Hub City Diner is something of a Lafayette institution. The décor is pure 50s – neon, jukebox, black and white checked floor – and makes for a fun and kitschy ambience. They even have a balloon man who comes in for kids’ night on Tuesdays. It’s a fun place to take the family or for a date. The real reason to come to Hub City Diner, though, is the food. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, they offer generous portions of classic American cuisine, well prepared. Alongside the traditional breakfast fare are some Louisiana specialties like New Orleans beignet strips, and the odd touch of sophistication like a spinach and feta omelet. Lunch and dinner are all about fun, traditional diner food – great burgers, chili cheese fries, Reubens, etc. They also have a nice array of salads, including a very good blackened catfish salad. For those daunted at the prospect of a calorie-laden repast, Hub City also offers a heart healthy menu, featuring flavorful entrees that won’t wreck your diet. Best of all, in my opinion, are the dinner plates – the meatloaf is wonderful, and the hamburger steak, smothered in cheese, onions, and gravy, is comfort food at its finest.
