Beth’s Books, located at 2700 Chartres St. in New Orleans, LA, is a small, but packed treasure of used and new books. The person behind the counter is always friendly and helpful. Customers are given the freedom to browse and read at leisure. The full shelves and tilting piles of books exude the feel of a writer’s secret hideaway. You will get light streaming in the windows in the daytime, night and stars blanketing the view at night. This Bywater neighborhood shop has a great atmosphere. The selection is impressive. I personally enjoy browsing through the New Orleans section. Every time I walk into Beth’s I know that I am going to leave with a great, one of a kind find. On my last visit I saw excellent used copies of gems, like Jeri Cain Rossi’s Red Wine Moan, Tom Piazza’s Why New Orleans Matters, the anthology French Quarter Fiction, and Andrei Codrescu’s The Blood Countess. To add to my excitement, they were all signed. I highly recommend Beth’s Books for locals and visitors alike. All books are sold at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend that you visit! Karen’s Book Barn & Java Stop is a small, locally owned and operated shop on the Main Street of LaGrange’s Historic District. They buy and sell used books, gifts and coffee. They have a wide variety of blended drinks, lattes and smoothies. Karen’s is a great little place to stop and visit in LaGrange. Right on the Main Street where a train runs right through the middle of the road every hour – a must see. Karen’s is THE place to start your visit in the historic district of LaGrange, KY. Even if you aren’t a book lover, Karen’s has great blended coffee drinks and smoothies (the Jamocha and Strawberry-Banana smoothie are my favorites). Karen is usually working the store herself, which adds to the small bookshop charm. It is the bona fide hotspot for LaGrange locals. Everyone here stops by for a drink and gossip, whether or not they buy a book. It is impossible to visit without seeing someone you know. Although there are a few quibbles (seating is sparse, especially if the shop is crowded, and the storefront is a bit cramped), Karen’s is a nice little bookstore, and a trip to LaGrange would be lacking without a visit! I had always been fiercely opposed to buying used books. Although I have no problem with purchasing other used media, for me, there is something intimate about purchasing a new book. I say this to make clear just how opposed I was to the concept of Magers & Quinn Booksellers in Minneapolis, MN. I got lured into Magers & Quinn by a desire to purchase new books from a local business, and support them instead of the usual national chains. Right up front, I found a display of new books, which were exactly what I wanted to read. After that, I started venturing back into the store. Let me assure you that Magers & Quinn is enormous, with a selection that, is impressive and reasonably priced. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. As I began to realize that my book addiction was overwhelmingly expensive, I tried their used books. Customers can buy books, which are comparable to new condition, for about forty cents on the dollar. I have now converted and am an advocate of purchasing used books! Clemens & Co. Books is exactly the kind of place you hope to find when you are exploring a picturesque, historic downtown area like Hogansville, GA. It is a wonderful bookstore, packed with over 40,000 volumes that range from children’s to military history, to science fiction and fantasy, to cookbooks. In fact, they have over 70 categories of books there, and, contrary to the usual practice of used bookstores, they maintain their organization meticulously! It is really rather easy to get around and to find what you are looking for in Clemens & Co., which is a refreshing change from many dark, cluttered stores of this type. The atmosphere in Clemens & Co. is pleasant and welcoming. They have high ceilings, lots of light, and well-spaced aisles, making browsing a genuine pleasure. It is very clean, so you will not mind getting down on your knees to explore the lower shelves. Once you have found a few books, sink into one of the big, comfy chairs and enjoy the free coffee they provide for all their customers. It really is a book-lover’s delight, and you can tell that the people who work there genuinely love books enjoy their jobs. Almost labyrinth-like in construction, the inlets and bends built into the shelves make the store seem endless. I’ve spent hours here just browsing the aisles. When you walk in, be sure to check out the books behind the glass cases- you’ll find some of the most rare and beautifully bound (not to mention OLD) books you have ever seen. The staff all really know their stuff: tell them that you like Robert Heinlein and you’d really love to read something similar, and they’ll recommend Lois McMaster Bujold. And if they don’t happen to have whatever you’re looking for on hand, they’ll be happy to special order it for you. If you’re into RPGs, not only do they have an impressive collection of books and materials, there’s also an entire room downstairs where they have tournaments, from Magic to Dungeons and Dragons to Monsterpocalypse Miniatures.
