My husband and I have lived in Jamaica Plains, MA for about ten years and we have been to Doyle’s Cafe many times. The great thing about this place is that it is great for a Saturday morning brunch when no one is around AND it works well as a tourist-stop when family and friends want to come in and see the real Boston. This is a famous and politically connected bar where the Irish and political elites of Boston still come in for a drink. It is where President Obama called and found Sgt. Crowley– the Cambridge Police Officer who arrested a black Harvard professor. Sgt. Crowley was drinking his “usual” beer here– and this is the place for “usuals.” Even if you aren’t looking to develop a long term relationship with a local pub, this is still a great place to hang out and be a part of the pulse of this Irish-American city. If you sit at the bar, choose the end away from the door for your best “people watching” post. The booths in the back are great for having your own private meeting, but not for seeing and being seen. And, don’t forget to eat and drink while you are there. They have fantastic American-ized versions of Irish pub classics.
