A few of my friends decided to go to The Phoenix last Saturday night for the first time. I was a little put off by the $5 cover charge at the door, but once inside, the drink specials made up for it! The place is huge!! I advise getting there a little early if you want a good seat, because they started filling up pretty quick. The bartender was super friendly and very fast! She recommended some really good shots! They had, what they called, “The beat the clock special”. Drafts were only 50 cents and rails were only 75 cents! The price went up a little each hour until they were back to $2 drafts and $3 rails. Needless to say, I was happy with the prices. The food was your typical bar food, but they had really good burgers. The prices on food were pretty cheap too. I couldn’t believe how good the band sounded. They have a great sound system in that place. There was a DJ during the band’s breaks and he was entertaining as well. There were a very wide range of customers. I didn’t feel too old or too young and people watching made for a really good time. They have a TON of pool tables in there and at a buck a game, I had to play a few rounds. I wasn’t too sure about going there, because I had heard the staff was rude, but everyone was very nice and really seemed like they were having as good of a time as we were! On the campus of the University of Illinois there are many bars. Legends is one that I have been to. Legends is a very nice 21 and up bar. It has big booths, small tables, and seats at the bar. There is a pool table in the back of the bar where you can usually find people playing. The lighting is very odd, in some places it is very dim and in others it is very bright. The bathrooms are well taken care of, and have good lighting. There is a statue of the old University of Illinois Mascot, Chief Illniwick and the bar has a huge entryway which makes it feel more welcoming. It is found in the group of bars on campus so it gets a lot of traffic from people going bar hopping as well as students. The bar has wooden floors, which is a nice break from all the linoleum floors that are found in most of the bars here in Champaign. The booths could be just a little more padded, but that is not that big of a deal, and most people sit at the bar anyways. The mirrors in the back of the bar make the back of the bar seem much lighter than the front of it so you can find the perfect spot for you. The Highline Athletic Club is a great place for people to work out. They have tons of ammenities that are available to you. It’s slightly pricy, but like my dad always says, “You get what you pay for”. They have a great indoor pool with different water exercise classes. Also, in the pool area is a hot tub, a dry sauna and a wet sauna. Personally, wet saunas are hard to breathe in and a dry sauna scorches my behind! When you walk in you can see a full board of names and pictures of the employees and what they do; that way you can pick the teacher you want for classes. They offer various amounts of classes such as cycling, water aerobics, and dancing. There’s a machine for every single muscle you can exercise, guaranteed! Beyond the machines you’ll find a gym with pickle ball courts and a basketball court. On the outer rim of the gym you’ll find a room for spinning, a room for kids and boxing, a room for tennis and many other things! Above that they have a track you can run around, a stretching room and some empty rooms in case you need some extra space to yourself. What I like about the gym is I was always curious about some classes, but never had the guts to ask. The way they built the gym, you can see into the lower rooms from the upper track. Well, if you live in or anywhere near Trenton, Missouri you have heard of Snappy’s. Most likely you have been there too and more than once. Not only is it a great place to grab a drink or something to eat but it’s also a great place to meet new friends, interesting people, or maybe that someone special you’ve been looking for. Every one, and I mean EVERYONE you meet there is a fun person just looking for a fun time. There has never been a fight here. The menu for the grill part is a bit sparse, but what they do make they make delicious. The place is broken down into three distinct parts. The front is the bar and grill, dartboards included. The middle is the pool hall part. The back part is purely for dancing and karaoke. There are plenty of tables and seats all throughout so you won’t ever have to stand around hoping you can find some place to sit down. The rear part does have a very good DJ and he will take requests, so if you want to have that slow dance with your special someone that won’t be a problem. The girls running the bar do have tip jars, but are NEVER pushy about it and never ask for tips. I’m sure they appreciate them but they are nice about it. There is also an old time jukebox in the front section where the bar is. It has a full library, from the classics to today’s style of music. The place is so friendly that if you go in and say hi to just one person you are pretty much guaranteed to make 20 friends that night. Stepping into the Dubliner was like stepping into a neighborhood pub in Ireland. The atmosphere was amazing, complete with live music and games such as pool and darts. The food was great and was much better than most pub food that you find out there, and the music creates a friendly and warm atmosphere. Whether it’s Guinness or Bud, they’ve got what you are looking for when it comes to beer and wine. Don’t forget happy hour, which offers $3 pints, $3 well spirits, $3 wines and many food specials too. Every Monday and Tuesday is Karaoke night, so head on out to this pub and show off your vocal skills. You never know who is watching. I first went to Guido’s for a birthday party. It was a bar with a very dim lighting. This bar is very friendly, and caters to all sorts of people. The bar even has a dart game and pool table, which is a lot of fun. There are big booths and large and small tables. Each booth has a light that is hung above it. These lights have stained glass shades over them and are hung from a chain painted gold. The bathrooms are well lit and well maintained. The biggest problem is the dart board is located in the very center right next to the largest table in the bar. Meaning that if you push your chair back to far you could get hit in the head with a dart (but I’ve never seen this happen obviously). I go to Guido’s to have fun with friends. The crowd there is mostly college age and a little older, so patrons tend to be about 21 and up. This bar is located in a stretch of bars near the campus of the University of Illinois, so you could add this to a bar crawl.
