http://www.sancarlosblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/jacksprime_sign.jpgIf you live in the bay area you might not think of San Mateo, CA as being one of the best places to find great dinning venues, but maybe you should. I’ve been living in San Mateo for over three years now, and I can sadly admit that I’ve driven past Jack’s Prime Burger and Shakes on numerous occasions without so much as a second thought. However recently, on the suggestion of my boyfriend, we visited this new restaurant, in order to satisfy our hunger for a great burger. When we arrived we were quickly shown to one of their wide booth tables next to their windows in the front of the restaurant. The menu was easy to read and simple, which was great because they showcased burgers, hence the name. The sweet potatoes fries and the thick ice cream milkshakes also caught our attention, so we ordered some in addition to our signature burgers. While we waited for our shakes to arrive we enjoyed looking out at the busy El Camino Real and observing the food being made in the open kitchen. The milkshakes were phenomenal: thick, creamy, and utterly satisfying. The sweet potato fires were crispy and perfectly seasoned with a great side sauce. The burgers were some of the best I’ve ever tasted, and my boyfriend agreed. Juicy and flavorful, Jack’s makes a burger the way it was intended. The service at Jack’s was great; our server was attentive and fun. I noticed several families with kids and it seemed like a great place for both parents and kids. The next time you have a craving for great burgers and creamy dreamy milkshakes, remember Jack’s Prime in San Mateo, Ca, you won’t be disappointed. moonside_bakeryFinding an awesome little place to grab a drink and a snack can be difficult in San Mateo, but Moonside Bakery & Café definitely fits the bill. Their pretzels are to die for, and their other baked goods (including cookies, decadent cakes, and pizzas) are intensely yummy. If you want something a little heavier, they also serve sandwiches and breakfast items. As far as drinks go, Moonside Bakery has Italian sodas in addition to things like hot chocolate, tea and coffee. Like any self respecting bakery, they also bake bread, which for the record is pretty delicious. Conveniently located near College of San Mateo (CSM) and Hillsdale Mall, Moonside Bakery & Cafe in San Mateo is perfect for your baked good needs. The bakery in San Mateo is an extension of their original bakery, in Half Moon Bay, but if you don’t feel like driving all the way out to the coast for some tasty treats, you can still get your fix. Perfect for snagging lunch or a snack between classes (or breakfast before), or buying freshly baked bread on your way home, Moonside Bakery & Café is a definite must if you like things that taste good. If you’re looking for other things in the area, globalYP.net is a definite must for a local online directory.

Health Care, Personal Care & Services / No Comments

vet_medical_specialistsWhen your beloved pet is sick or injured, it’s an extremely stressful and sad time. Putting the health, and in many cases the life, of your pet in the hands of someone else takes a lot of trust, and I trust Veterinary Medical Specialists in San Mateo, California at 251 N Amphlett Blvd. The people who work there are true animal lovers, and you can feel how much they want to help your pets, and how genuine their concern and feelings are. They truly understand that your pet is a part of your family, is someone you love and care about, and someone that they need to do their best to take care of. Your pet is never a number, and they make a point to learn their name and things about them. The nurses there were so loving to my dog when she was undergoing chemotherapy, and always made a point of letting me know that she was special to them and their little “rockstar”. My dog’s doctor would even go back and play with her when she had to stay overnight. In terms of their medical standards, VMS has state of the art equipment, highly trained veterinarians, and are very thorough when it comes to the health of your pet. The office staff is friendly and always asks if there’s anything you need while you wait, and I never at all felt like their only interaction with me was to demand payment up front. For treating a pet who is ill or even terminal, VMS is wonderful at caring for them and treating them as important and loved members of your family. I’m personally very grateful for the love and care they gave to my dog in the year long chemotherapy treatments she went through. I know that they did their best to make her feel comfortable and safe with them, while receiving the best medical treatment available. For a veterinarian you can trust to take amazing care of your furry family member, make an appointment with Veterinary Medical Specialists. Fro-Yo You Should Go-Go Get: Yumi Yogurt in San Mateo

Posted by admin on March 24, 2009
Eating & Drinking Places / No Comments

yumi_yogurtFro-yo is basically one of the most amazing things in existence. I don’t know if it’s the texture, the taste, or some other quality that only frozen yogurt possesses, but whatever it is, it’s delicious. My absolute favorite place to go for frozen yogurt has to be Yumi Yogurt, at 3955 S El Camino Real, in San Mateo, CA. It’s really hard to find frozen yogurt in Northern California, and even in Southern California it’s mostly chains with yogurt that tastes like frozen bitter water (keep your faux-yo to yourself So Cal). Thank goodness for Yumi. It’s conveniently located near Hillsdale Mall (so you can just “happen” to be in the neighborhood and by that point you “might as well” go get some fro-yo), and they offer a ton of flavors. Their portion sizes are gigantic, a small is more than enough (unless you’re having a fro-yo attack, in which case I completely understand springing for the next size up for just a few cents more), they also have lots of different toppings (candy, nuts, fruit etc.), and offer regular ice cream, smoothies, and a few other frozen sweet treats. But really, let’s be honest, it’s all about the frozen yogurt itself. They rotate their flavors through, but there’s always some kind of vanilla and at least one kind of chocolate available (I’m a sucker for a half and half chocolate/vanilla deal), and they’ll give you a sample of anything you want to try. Whether you want tart, sweet, fruity or sugary, there are always several flavors to choose from. It’s pretty small inside, but there are some outside tables, and they’ll give you a to-go lid if you want. Depending on when you go, Yumi can have a line out the door, but it usually doesn’t take that long to make it to the front and to your cold creamy goodness. Yumi Yogurt is probably one of my favorite places to eat out in the Bay Area, and if you like frozen yogurt, try it and it will be one of yours too. If you like other things, and want to find more to try, try searching on globalYP.net, the local online directory.
