Third Planet Comics is a comic shop located in the southern part of Houston, TX. The building is an interesting shade of light blue. Parking is located at the rear of the establishment. I have not really ever had a problem with overcrowding, so this is always a plus in my opinion. Once you walk into the store, you are always greeted by one of the helpful employees. This is one of Third Planet’s strong points- employees. This business’s employees are friendly and helpful. I have never encountered rude or pushy staff members. They are knowledgeable without being obnoxious. The atmosphere of Third Planet is laid back. I enjoy shopping here. There is a nice selection of merchandise, as well. From action figures to comics, you can indulge your sci-fi craving without logging on to a website and having to wait for the mailman. The prices are very reasonable. The comics are arranged nicely, rather than stashed away in some dark dusty room. I have managed to snag a few great issues of some comics I have been eyeing for a while. They accept the universal currency of cash and also the ever-popular plastic credit cards. If you are ever in Houston, stop on by. You will definitely be happy you did! Even as an adult, I have not outgrown my love of comic books. That is why I am glad that I live near Captain Comic, a great comic book store located in New Hyde Park. One of the best things about the store, is that in addition to their huge selection of titles that cover many different comic book genres, is that the clientele is very mixed, providing a good sense of community within the store. However, there is more to this family run business than just comic books, it is also a great place to purchase science fiction, and really entertainment in general, with tons of memorabilia and collectibles. Over the past few years, I have purchased model kits and vinyl figurines. While the selection is not huge, they have great prices. Finally, Captain Comics also sells a large number of customizable card games, both starter packs and boosters. There are also usually plenty of people hanging around ready to play a game, making it a great way to pass the afternoon. The best part about Captain Comic is not what it sells, however, but rather the people that run it. They are very warm and welcoming, and do a good job of building not just customers, but also friends. So the next time you need a comic, or anything science fiction related, be sure to visit this great store. Back before I lived in Boston, Pandemonium Books & Games was always on my list of things to do while visiting. It’s an independent bookstore devoted exclusively to science fiction and fantasy, with everything from children’s books to role playing games, and all the good stuff in between. And best of all: they sell both new and used books. I can’t even count the number of hard-to-find out of print sci-fi books I’ve been able to get there. These days, they also sell a bunch of fun add-ons too, things like t-shirts, stuffed animals, dice, and decorations. Even my four-year-old niece likes to come in with me (she goes for all the shiny fairy postcards). The staff all really know their stuff: tell them that you like Robert Heinlein and you’d really love to read something similar, and they’ll recommend Lois McMaster Bujold. And if they don’t happen to have whatever you’re looking for on hand, they’ll be happy to special order it for you. If you’re into RPGs, not only do they have an impressive collection of books and materials, there’s also an entire room downstairs where they have tournaments, from Magic to Dungeons and Dragons to Monsterpocalypse Miniatures. They also frequently have book signings with some of the best current sci-fi authors; even Terry Pratchett has come through before. As a sci-fi fan for life, I hope Pandemonium always lives long and prospers. Don’t spend a long time looking for something in a phone book, visit globalYP.net, yellow pages that are online, instead.
