Salsa’s Mexican Restaurant in Charlotte, NC has the best salsa I’ve ever tasted – even better than in Mexico – but that is not the only thing it has going for it. Every dish I’ve tried has been wonderful. My favorites are the California burrito, the Pollo con queso and the chimichangas. The ingredients are always so fresh and perfectly cooked. With extremely generous portions at very reasonable prices, you definitely get your money’s worth! The food is so good that even after filling up on the amazing salsa first, you can’t stop until your plate is clean. The staff is friendly and attentive – your glass is never empty – and the atmosphere is perfect to bring the family for a fun, casual night out. You can do all that without missing your favorite sports game on one of the many TVs throughout the restaurant or bar area. The rest of Charlotte must love this restaurant as much as I do as they have now expanded to their third location, although my favorite is the one near Ballantyne and Pineville. Cleanliness is a big factor for me too, and I’ve never found the restaurant or bathrooms unclean on any of my many visits at multiple locations. I have been dining at Patrick’s Pub in Moon Township, Pennsylvania ever since the luck of the Irish brought me to this unexpected gem at 1207 Spring Run Road a couple of years ago. The quality of the food and the service is consistently good. The prices are fairly reasonable, too. Patrick’s is chiefly known for its Irish fare. While I have never visited the Emerald Isle, some of those who have say Patrick’s food is authentic, and it compares favorably with the best of Ireland. With half-priced happy hour running from the time Fly Bar opens until closing, you can get a pizza and a pint for under $10 at Fly Bar. A varied menu includes not only a large variety of house Pizzas, but a Black-Forest Ham and Brie Sandwich, and a salad that is ‘fruits to nuts’, it’s guaranteed that all types of appetites will be satisfied here. Their bar doesn’t serve spirits- you’re limited to beer, wine and sake cocktails – the Pink Ginger is a must-have – the wit of the bartenders, and the friendliness of the locals more than make up for the lack of whiskey. Fly Bar has a pool table in back, and hosts art exhibits from local artists, which switch out on a quarterly basis. Carlino’s Pizza & Deli is a fantastic place to eat in Gresham, OR. It is a family owned business and the owner is there almost all day every day. The employees are very friendly and often strike up conversations with the guests at the restaurants, making it a place where there are many regular customers. They have pretty good deli style sandwiches, but the pizza, and pizza styled sandwiches, are by far the best in town. The cozy atmosphere, friendly employees and delicious food make it the perfect place to just hang out. There is also a small bar attached to the restaurant. This tiny bar is packed on game days with people drinking beer, eating pizza and having a great time! On a few occasions I have seen some of the Portland Blazers at the restaurant and they are always more than willing to sign something or take a picture with you. They also do deliveries and catering which is awesome. Generally, it takes between 30 minutes and an hour for them to make a pizza and deliver it to your house. Well, if you live in or anywhere near Trenton, Missouri you have heard of Snappy’s. Most likely you have been there too and more than once. Not only is it a great place to grab a drink or something to eat but it’s also a great place to meet new friends, interesting people, or maybe that someone special you’ve been looking for. The middle is the pool hall part. The back part is purely for dancing and karaoke. There are plenty of tables and seats all throughout so you won’t ever have to stand around hoping you can find some place to sit down. The rear part does have a very good DJ and he will take requests, so if you want to have that slow dance with your special someone that won’t be a problem. The girls running the bar do have tip jars, but are NEVER pushy about it and never ask for tips. I’m sure they appreciate them but they are nice about it. There is also an old time jukebox in the front section where the bar is. It has a full library, from the classics to today’s style of music. The place is so friendly that if you go in and say hi to just one person you are pretty much guaranteed to make 20 friends that night. Allsports Café has been a staple in the Roanoke Valley for many years. There are now two locations, one in the Grandin area and another in Salem. Allsports has great food, unbeatable prices, and a fantastic selection of entertainment. The wings are consistently voted as the best in Roanoke by readers of local magazines and newspapers. Friday night karaoke at the Grandin location has been going on for over nine years and continues to pack the place each and every time. Just last Friday it was standing room only by 9:00pm. The Coliseum in Camp Hill, PA offers a unique and exciting opportunity for friends and family alike to gather in a fun environment and enjoy some arcade games. Located in Central PA, this establishment is similar to Dave & Buster’s but more convenient for residents in the area than taking a trip to Baltimore or Philadelphia. Upon entering the Coliseum, you’ll have the option of going three different ways. To the left, stairs lead to a downstairs area which houses a bar and bowling alleys along with plenty of televisions for all your sporting needs. Straight ahead there’s the main attraction of the Coliseum, which is the arcade. To the right, there’s a restaurant with a typical fare of American cuisine waiting for visitors to come relax and grab a bite to eat. Since this is mostly a family centered environment, you’ll see a lot of kids running around enjoying themselves on a Friday or Saturday night. If you are older and want to have fun minus the crowds, going on a weekday would be the best solution. There are also more up to date games such as Guitar Hero, a roller coaster simulator where the seats actually rumble to mimic a real roller coaster, and a Trivia game which is easily the most popular new game. For roughly ten to twenty dollars, a family of four can purchase enough tokens to last a couple of hours, which is very inexpensive compared to the cost of going to a movie nowadays. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and the restrooms are well maintained. On a busy night the restaurant portion of the Coliseum can get pretty crowded, as well as the bar when there is a major sports game going on. The downstairs bar is a great place to hang out and watch the playoffs when they are on. Duke’s Mesquite Broiler in Temecula is a nice little getaway for those who wish to get some good barbeque, yet do not want the fuss of a traditional restaurant. Duke’s allows customers to choose their own seats and then you go up to the front table and order your food. This allows for customers to come in and drink a few pitchers of beer (as our group did), or bring the whole family in for an inexpensive meal. Adding to the atmosphere is a full bar with plenty of flat screen TVs. This place was pretty empty when our party went in around 5pm, but as the night wore on, more and more people started to come in and sit at the bar. There was a wide range of customers, from a group of young guys sitting at the bar watching sports and drinking beer, to a family of four enjoying barbeque ribs as evident by the sauce on their faces, and an elderly couple coming in for the senior specials. This place is open and welcoming with even an outside patio for those who wish to smoke and drink their beer. It is a nice getaway, and a family of four should plan on easily spending about $30. Though the décor theme at Center Ice Bar and Grill is hockey, it’s a great place to watch any type of game or to just hang out with friends. The owners of this newly-opened bar did a fabulous job creating a fun, stylish atmosphere that’s cozy and welcoming enough to waste away the afternoon or evening. Located at 68 Airport Road Unit #10 in Fitchburg, MA, they run lots of special events (ladies’ night, draft pitcher deals, etc.) to draw in the crowds, and you can even reserve a table in advance if you want a prime spot for viewing your favorite game. Staff are friendly and easygoing, an important quality in a great bar, and there are an array of TVs and speakers scattered around for optimal viewing no matter where you’re seated. Drinks are well-mixed (a frozen mudslide, for example, might SOUND like a simple enough drink, but this is one of the few local bars I’ve found that gets it right!), and the drink menu offers a good selection. The food is an incredible value – even if you aren’t in the mood for an alcoholic beverage, Center Ice is still a worthwhile spot for an inexpensive, filling pub-style meal. The serving sizes are huge, and I challenge anyone to finish the side of fries accompanying their sandwich!
