Spunktown Tavern is located in the back streets of Boyertown, PA with a welcoming old town atmosphere. Everyone has a local neighborhood bar. A hangout in your neighborhood where mostly ‘locals’ congregate to grab a quick drink after work or with friends. Our neighborhood has one as well, and it’s been around for a while. Desmond’s Tavern has been here ever since I first moved to New York in 2000. It’s a tiny, cramped bar with a few stools and a ‘stage’ where local bands are invited to play. A cheap unassuming green and white sign hangs over the one dirty window and beaten up door. The bar itself is only as wide as the door and window put together. The window is messily covered in hand-written paper signs inviting you to watch the latest Manchester United game on so and so day. From the outside, it looks like a very forgettable dump. On the inside it’s not much different. It is your quintessential local dive-bar. Many newer swankier bars have come and gone in the area but Desmond’s still soldiers on. It hasn’t changed much since I first set foot in there, except now they serve bar food, daily specials, and added a chalkboard outside to let you know! Black Rock Tavern is a local bar up in Yapank, NY. This bar has excellent food for a small town pub. From the outside you wouldn’t think this place would even be big enough to house a kitchen, but they do. Their food is pretty good, seeing that Black Rock is a bar first. Their hamburgers are great – very delicious and juicy. They have the best wing and beer deal you could ever imagine. Its $12 for 2 hours of all you can eat delicious hot, medium, regular, or teriyaki wings and all you can drink pitchers of beer. It’s important for the staff at bars to be friendly, and they definitely are at Black Rock Tavern. Especially the bartenders, you just want to keep buying beers from them because they are just so nice. The overall appearance of the bar is almost like a really nice back-country bar. It feels like you’re at home, but since you aren’t you can lay back, relax and drink some beers. They have a pool table, even a B.A.C level monitor on the wall, indoor and outdoor bar and plenty of room to dance with some of the best dj’s on Long Island. In the small town of Fitzwilliam, NH lays a jewel of a tavern that just opened in late summer of last year. It sits within the Fitzwilliam Inn that has reopened as a bed and breakfast. As you approach the center of town, the first thing you will note across the street from the common is this over 200 year old inn that commands your attention with its charm. If for no other reason than to explore this lovely town, you should pop into the Thistle & Crown Tavern that is inside the Fitzwilliam Inn. Right now the Thistle & Crown Tavern is only open from Thursday through Sunday, but this new tavern is going to become a welcome place to relax and enjoy a brew or wine or sample from their delicious and varied menu. Thursday nights are very appealing because not only does this family orientated business offer reasonably priced excellent cuisine, but also has an open mic for diners to enjoy. Their hosts are very gracious and they have just added local weekly performers on Saturday nights in a separate room, just a doorway away from the cozy tavern that is replete with fireplace and a sitting room. This room, too, is heated with a cozy wood stove so visitors can sit and relax after eating. This lovely tavern has retained the best of the old and the new, keeping the true charm of eras gone by along with very healthy food and gracious, friendly hostesses. Broadacres Tavern, in Aurora, Oregon, is a very small bar, but has a great atmosphere. Everyone seems to know each other inside this bar, and they make newcomers feel right at home! It has a Cheers type feel to it. The parking lot is very small, and not paved very well. The outside almost looks like it’s in shambles. If you can get past this, then you will love it. It is very small inside as well, but has tables for you to sit, as well as their bar seating. They have a TV, jukebox, and a pool table as well. I believe they also have Keno to play. The staff at the bar has always been very friendly. My father had gone there for years, and sometimes went more than once a day. The staff became friends of his, and looked out for him in his older years. Their food is awesome! Not sure how people feel about bar food, but their sliders are THE best! They have “hamburger Mondays” where their hamburgers are $1! They are a good size too. You can also have fries if you’d like, and I believe they are also $1. It is VERY reasonably priced. They have other food specials on other days during the week, but this is what we eat most often. If you want to go somewhere to have a good meal, a great drink, unwind and relax in a laid back atmosphere, this is definitely the place to go in Oregon. My wife and I decided to take a nice little weekend trip to historic Gettysburg, PA. After touring the amazing military park surrounding the city we were very hungry. We stumbled upon Dobbin House Tavern while touring downtown. I am so very happy we did. Eating at Dobbin was one of the highlights of our visit. I ordered the duck, and it is the best I have ever had! My wife (who really is not a meat person) ordered the Prime Rib and ate the entire thing. We were seated in the library room in two old fashioned chairs next to the fireplace. The atmosphere really is fantastic. It feels as if you are dining around the time of the Civil War. The servers are dressed in the attire of the era, and their menus utilize a great deal of the vernacular from the time period also (they pull it off, it is not “corny” or “forced” like at other themed restaurants). In conclusion, I would recommend Dobbin House Tavern to anyone. The food is great, the atmosphere is intimate, and the staff is very accommodating. You can’t say enough about Philosopher’s Stone, but I’ll try my hardest. They have great food and a great bar atmosphere. The bar includes the standard darts and pool, but it also has some of the great arcade games from yesteryear. You can sit outside from Spring until Fall and even play table tennis or cornhole while you wait for your food (or drinks). Philosopher’s Stone specializes in very hearty comfort food, like Country-Fried Chicken and their ultimate Nachos (I actually have ordered them twice in one sitting). Philosopher’s Stone is “bar-food” taken to an all-new level. P-Stone (as their patrons call it) also has great local bands that play every weekend through the summer months. And the bands really know how to jam. This place isn’t your typical Charlotte restaurant. You don’t need reservations and you don’t need to get dressed up. This place is a come-as-you-are type of place. The clientele is a really cool mix of local artists and musicians and young hipsters. Check it out when you get a chance. If you are a big fan of dives and local restaurants, this is one you can’t look past. It is at most a mile away from uptown. I’m happy to say that The Village Tavern in Marcellus NY has become that place. You always feel welcome and the bartender knows your drink. With the New Year’s celebrations come great music, all the people you know and some unfamiliar faces which adds to the fun. When the party gets too rockin’ for you downstairs you can walk on up to the second floor and relax at a table next to the fireplace and chat with friends. While you are upstairs you can order any of the great food options on the menu. The clams and crab legs are always great! The staff is always friendly and you will never wait forever at the bar trying to grab their attention. It’s so nice to walk up to the bar to order and your drink is already there! The owners are usually on site and always willing to chat with people. They have a great understanding of what being THE local tavern is all about and go above and beyond to create that experience. The name is the same, but inside and out, Hamilton Tavern is worlds different. When new owners came in a couple years ago, they bestowed new life to what was once a dingy, sketchy, dive bar. What you will find is four, quality microbrews on tap rounded out by a selection of bombers. If all of this has your stomach grumbling and your taste buds tingling, you had better head over soon. Blame it on the good food, the very reasonable prices (entrees are usually all under $14), the beer selection, or the utter lack of competition, but this place is hard to get a table at.
