Skycraft Surplus is a one of a kind store that’s packed from floor to ceiling with electronics surplus, mechanical parts, tools, and unidentifiable doodads. Anyone who loves to build or tinker in the garage could browse for hours here without being bored. Some items are brand new, and others have been lurking on the shelf for decades, waiting to be discovered. The staff is very knowledgeable, and can help in identifying that mystery part you’ve been searching for. Some of the “just for show” items are worth the trip to see, too. The front of the store is adorned with a lighted flying saucer and a giant missile. Inside are a collection of handmade radio controlled boats made by the owner, all with a certain vintage flair. Skycraft is my favorite store, and I’ve come here looking for things like capacitors and resistors, stainless steel metric screws sold individually, linear bearings, unusual light bulbs, scrap metal pieces, copper clad board, and LEDs. Miss Anne keeps an interesting inventory of antiques, furniture, vintage goods, consignment items, and Alabama memorabilia (Roll Tide!). I Have been shopping for clothes at No Relation in New York City, NY for several years now. With a little bit of luck and skill, you can find great vintage clothes without spending very much money. Most of the times I have been here I have managed to spend just a bit, sometimes as little as five dollars for a cool vintage t-shirt. A good pair of jeans here can be hard to find and cost a bit more, but it is worth checking out before hitting up other very expensive stores in the area. I first discovered No Relation a few years ago when I was walking around the neighborhood and was struck by the window display, which definitely featured some of their more prized vintage wear. This is certainly a theme here. You will notice some of their more valued items, such as vintage t-shirts that are usually hard to come by. These items are usually kept above the counter and have steeper price tags. That said, you could still find almost anything you need here for a very low price. You just might have to look for a while. I would recommend going on a Monday or Tuesday, when crowds are light and you can spend all the time you need to browse their very large selection. They also carry shoes, which are in pretty good condition, considering some of them have been used before. It is good to note that the previous owners obviously took good care of their shoes. Whenever I visit the Pretty New Thrift Store, located in Farmingdale, NY at 238 Main St, I never quite know what I will end up going home with, but I always know that I will find a good bargain. This store, which relies entirely on donations and gives its profits away to charity, may be small, but carries a surprisingly wide range of items. While I usually bypass the clothes, there are many racks of it, ranging from barely worn fashions from last season to some great vintage pieces. They have apparel for men, women, and children. They also have a nice wall of accessories including belts, shoes, and whatever else they might get in. What I enjoy is looking at the knick-knacks and other curios that are for sale. While perusing the shelves, I have made great finds, such as holiday themed garden flags, funky glassware that looks great in my china cabinet, Christmas decorations, photo frames, and more. Necromance is a fascinating place that makes will make you think of a weird little shop from a supernatural story – the kind of story where the luckless hero buys an enchanted monkey paw and takes it home, unaware of the tragic curse upon it (or, if you’re more into TV, you might say it looks like the place where the Munsters and the Addams Family buy their home decor.) There are real animal skulls for sale – tiny foxes, rabbits, lizards, you name it. There are also petrified bugs, macabre books and antique medical instruments (the medical instruments are actually surprisingly useful in daily life. Once you have that weird little clamp that can reach behind your sofa and retrieve lost objects, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without it). If you’re very lucky, Lulu the bulldog will be there to greet you. She is a friendly, fat, toad-like little creature, and you will adore her at first sight. The clerks are pretty friendly creatures too, and overall the atmosphere is actually much more welcoming and elegant than I’m probably making it sound. If you’re a 16-year-old kid with purple hair and a nose ring, you’ll find a lot to admire here. But if you’re a 40-year-old accountant who still likes vampires, classy taxidermy and other curiosities, Necromance is one of Los Angeles’ must-see establishments.
